A surfer brought the girl to shore before going back for the man, who had by then lost consciousness, at Back Beach at Black Head, about 25km north of Forster, around 3pm.
Despite the efforts of the surfer and paramedics, the 42-year-old man was unable to be revived and died at the scene."A nearby surfer was able to take the girl to shore then returned, taking the man – now unresponsive – to the beach," NSW Police said.The death comes after a spate of water tragedies across NSW over the holiday period.
Authorities have called on the community to be careful when heading to the beach or inland waterways.
