A man has died in the NSW Hunter region following an alleged assault between two men who were armed, one with an axe and the other with a scooter. The man was found with serious head injuries at Cambridge Ave at Raymond Terrace just before 2am on Tuesday, police said. Paramedics treated the 38-year-old man, however, he died at the scene. The man was allegedly injured in an altercation with another man. The men were allegedly armed, police said in an update.

Both the men were, however, known to police. A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby after the incident. He was taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station before being transferred to Maitland Hospital for assessment. Investigations are ongoing.
