An Ottawa judge sentenced Graham to life in prison in August 1991, three months after he had been convicted. An Ottawa Citizen report on the sentencing hearing at the time said Graham had kidnapped the woman at knifepoint from a Wellington Street tavern on May 19, 1990. After taking her to a vacant lot a few blocks away, he sexually assaulted her, strangled and beat her until she was unconscious, kicked her in the head and threw her, naked, onto a small brush fire.

“It is for the protection of society that I feel compelled to impose a life sentence on this man,” Justice Hugh Poulin told the court.
