A 62-year-old man with a violent history was arrested in the area of the boat basin on the South Side of St. John’s yesterday afternoon after allegedly attacking a woman on the trail at Fort Amherst.
The woman reported being assaulted around 4 p.m. by a man who was not known to her. Her injuries are not believed to be serious. Christopher Sawicki, who is originally from Poland, was arrested a short time later and charged with assault with a weapon and breaches of court and probation orders. He made a brief appearance in court this morning, offering greetings to the judge and saying “It’s you and me again.”
Sawicki was previously found not criminally responsible in the stabbing death of 57-year-old George Benoit in Piccadilly in 2008 due to “manic episode of bipolar disorder,” and had “no concept of the consequences of his actions.”
