The IIO is investigating after the suspect was injured during the arrest.

Surrey RCMP arrested a man after he allegedly yelled racial slurs at a prayer vigil held Sunday in Surrey for the victims of the New Zealand mosque massacre.

The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate because the suspect was injured while in custody. The IIO says at around 4:30 p.m., Surrey officers attended the pre-planned vigil at 13400-block of 104 Avenue. Mounties allege a man was acting suspiciously and disturbing the peace when he began yelling racial slurs and taking photos of police vehicles and the crowd. The IIO says the suspect was taken to a hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The IIO will now determine whether police actions led to the man’s injuries. The agency said no further information would be released about the incident.
