Diego Huerta, a Mexican student accused of murdering his Vancouver landlord, had stolen a large sum of rent money before the slaying, according to the Crown.

A man accused in the murder of his Vancouver landlord had stolen rent money just before the slaying in the building that catered to young travellers and foreign students, a prosecutor said Monday.

A next-door neighbour who heard screaming and banging and thought the noise came from upstairs noticed the next morning that a person was wrapped in a blanket on the seventh-floor hallway, he said. The neighbour assumed that the person in the blanket was drunk and sleeping but reported the matter to the building concierge who tried to wake up the person who he recognized as Kazdaghli, Mulligan told B.C. Supreme Court Justice Terence Schultes.

Mulligan said that police found no signs of a violent struggle in the hallway where the victim’s body was found, indicating that Kazdaghli had been dragged or carried to that location.
