A man with a violent history due to mental illness has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a woman on a trail near Fort Amherst.

63-year-old Chris Sawicki was arrested near the harbour boat basin following the incident, which allegedly involved a crowbar, on October 11 of last year. He’s undergone several psychiatric assessments since then and remains in custody at the Waterford Hospital.It was determined he was suffering from bipolar disorder and a manic episode at the time of the killing, and was found not criminally responsible. He was released after five years and granted an absolute discharge.

Sawicki was already facing charges of uttering threats and breaching release conditions before the Fort Amherst incident. In court yesterday, his lawyer said he had instructions from Sawicki to plead not guilty to all charges.
