The Hubtown Theatre group in Truro is best known for comedic performances that leave their audiences filled with joy and laughter. This Halloween, however, they've put the comedy on hold to deliver a stage adaptation of Frankenstein. | SaltWire
Paul Gamble , as Victor Frankenstein, is joined on stage by his two hesitant assistants, played by Rod DeViller and Liam Browne. – Brendyn Creamerin Truro is known first and foremost for comedic performances that leave their audiences filled with joy and laughter.
Nick Dear’s adaptation, which took to the Royal National Theatre in February of 2011, starred Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Lee Miller alternating between the roles of Frankenstein and the Creature. It closely follows the narrative of Shelley’s original work. Myette has been involved with a number of productions put on by Hubtown Theatre. Going back over 10 years, he has acted, directed and even done tech for the group. He finds this play to be the darkest that they’ve staged yet.
“I struggle to say that it’s comic relief, it’s not quite that obvious, but there is a bit of a lighter tone in the scenes with them where they, sort of, bicker and squabble compared to the rest of show, which for the most part is serious.”Brian Richard Sears has been with the group even longer than Myette. He, alongside the other director of this show Sheila Newell, has been a part of Hubtown Theatre since its inception in 1981.
“You’d normally think of him as being overtly nasty, but it’s not that – he has aspects to him that are not good,” Sears said. “He’s self-obsessed, but when you have something to dig into and you can work with in that manner, it makes it so much more fun and so much more rewarding.” Even as cast members waited around to begin rehearsal, they spoke about who the next person to direct a show would be. Many spoke of the shows they had already directed.
