Drivers on New South Wales roads are being urged to use their 'common sense' during the holiday period as double demerit points come into effect across the state from Friday.

Drivers are being warned to"do the right thing" this holiday period as double demerits return on New South Wales roads.

The operation also includes all road-related legislation including drink and drug driving, and driving when tired. Acting Premier and Minister for Police Paul Toole has urged drivers to be responsible when getting behind the wheel as the state has"road rules for a reason". “You don’t want to get a fine in the mail or lose your licence, but worse...you don’t want to be the reason someone can’t celebrate with all their loved ones this Christmas, so I’m calling on drivers to do the right thing every time they get behind the wheel.”

“Even a drink or two increases your blood alcohol concentration, and as it rises so does you risk of being involved in a crash," he said. According to NSW Police, five people died during the holiday season last year and three of those were killed in crashes where alcohol was involved.
