Pharmacies in New South Wales will have extended powers as Premier Dominic Perrottet seeks to ease growing pressure on the state's healthcare system.
Women will need to have previously received a prescription for the contraceptive pill to be eligible for the pharmacy renewal scheme.
NSW will become the first state to allow pharmacists to renew prescriptions, however Queensland is also looking at a similar trial. “We’re fast-tracking these important reforms to give people the care they need now. We know household budgets are under strain and that’s why we will also foot the bill.”
“If the pharmacy guild was really serious about improving access, then we’d make bigger packs of medications for patients and increase the length of supply,” RACGP President Dr Nicole Higgins told Sky News Australia.
