A municipal election officer in Maguindanao del Sur died in an ambush on Monday, Feb. 13, in Lambayong town, Sultan Kudarat province, police said.

Capt. Jetro Doligas, Lambayong municipal police chief, said Haviv Macabangen Maindan, municipal election officer of the town of Sultan sa Barongis, was driving his vehicle on his way home when he was ambushed in Barangay Pingguiaman by motorcycle-riding gunmen at around 2 p.m. “He was going home on board his silver gray Toyota Fortuner going to Lambayong from his office in Sultan sa Barongis when fired upon,” Doligas said in a radio interview, adding that the victim died on the spot.
He said the victim’s vehicle then swerved towards a swampy section of the roadside just beside an irrigation canal following the ambush. Sultan sa Barongis Mayor Allandatu Angas said he was saddened by the death of the election official, whom he described as a dedicated servant.
