A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck offshore of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, on Wednesday, sending tremors through several regions. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( PHIVOLCS) confirmed the quake was an aftershock of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit the same area on June 8.
The epicenter of the latest quake was located approximately 37 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani, Davao Occidental, occurring at 12:14 p.m. local time. PHIVOLCS classified the tremor as tectonic in nature, originating from the Cotabato Trench, and warned of expected aftershocks in the coming weeks. Teresito C. Bacolcol, PHIVOLCS director, explained in a briefing during the Sustainability Expo 2026 that the epicenter of the June 8 mainshock and this aftershock are roughly 50 kilometers apart.
He noted that aftershocks from the earlier quake are likely to persist, as the initial magnitude 7.8 earthquake resulted in significant destruction, including over 90 fatalities and infrastructure damage amounting to around P1.47 billion, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). The magnitude 6.4 aftershock caused varying intensities across regions, with the strongest effects recorded in Glan, Sarangani, at Intensity V. Other areas with notable intensity levels included Kiamba, Sarangani; General Santos City; Malungon; Alabel, Sarangani; Tupi; and Polomolok, South Cotabato, where Intensity IV was measured.
In contrast, Maasim, Maitum, and Malapatan, Sarangani, as well as Lake Sebu and Tampakan, South Cotabato, experienced Intensity III tremors. Despite the significant magnitude, PHIVOLCS assured the public that no tsunami warning was necessary and anticipated no structural damage from this event
