For one thing, we wouldn\u0027t have to listen to Elon Musk\u0027s social media musings on the fate of Ukraine, which sounded as if they were written by Russian trolls.
Chances are, never. Hopefully most people have never read a tweet, or know what Twitter is. Which is great. Because Twitter is the trans fat of communication, something we should expunge from our chat diet. To wit, Twitter’s prospective new owner, Elon Musk, weighed in on the political debate this week with a tweet about Ukraine that could have been written by said trolls in St. Petersburg. Political and geopolitical Twitter then spent the better part of the day dunking on Musk this way and that, as if his half-baked plan had any prospect of becoming reality. Things got so bad, Volodymyr Zelenskyy had to take time out of his day directing the killing of Russian invaders to offer his own dunk.
Which isn’t to say Twitter can’t be useful for journalism. Only that it should be used primarily as a listening tool, or to simply broadcast one’s work. When observing a conflict such as Ukraine, for example, Twitter can often give a reporter access to either local residents or subject-matter experts. Used advisedly, it can provide real insight into breaking news by sourcing content and video from the scene.
