MACC says will not issue new rules on handouts before polls

MACC chief Azam Baki says the Election Offences Act 1954 clearly states the dos and don'ts during state polls. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, July 31, 2022.

THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will not issue new guidelines on handouts before elections, said agency chief Azam Baki. Speaking at a press conference after launching the use of body-worn cameras in Putrajaya today, he said this is because the dos and don’ts during polls are clear in the Election Offences Act 1954.

“Section 10 of the act is very clear about dos and don’ts that every election candidate must follow,” he said in response to PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man’s request for guidelines be announced about handouts before elections. Tuan Ibrahim reportedly said specific guidelines are important so all parties can be on the same page about handouts they are allowed to offer before polls.MACC launched seven operation rooms for state elections and the Kuala Terengganu by-election at the MACC headquarters, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Penang, Kelantan and Terengganu. They will operate around the clock until August 12.
