Proper research would have revealed that Henry Dundas was a noted abolitionist
Henry Dundas deserves at least a very long street named after him. First of all, he was instrumental in getting slavery abolished in Scotland, in 1778. A lawyer then, he took a pro bono case of a runaway slave, Joseph Knight, against his owner, John Wedderburn, who appealed when a lower court freed Knight. Dundas not only won the appeal, but the judges’ decision ended slavery for all slaves in Scotland.
Dundas was more sophisticated than Wilberforce, the dedicated Parliamentary leader of the abolition forces. Dundas understood that for abolition to be accepted in the British Empire, the plantation owners would have to co-operate. Otherwise, they could buy slaves from slave traders of other countries. Indeed, when the U.K. abolished the slave trade in the Empire, in 1807, owners managed to carry on by buying slaves from slave ships with false ownership papers and flags on board.
At the time, there were slave owners from Cabinet members down to MPPs, notably William Jarvis, provincial secretary, and owner of six slaves. The abolitionist attorney general, White, lost his seat in the next election, probably for his opposition to slavery.
