Big, bold, basic, beautiful – if this is the Panerai you picture, a VIP visit to the About Time watch fair in September might have you changing your mind about the venerable brand.
Early watches remained true to their tool-watch roots; modifications in the 50s, 60s and 70s concentrated on technical advances and innovations tailored to naval needs. Fast-forward to the 1990s and Sylvester Stallone stepped into the role of early influencer, ordering a Panerai to wear in the film. Enthusiasts took note, and the brand launched to the broader watch community at Geneva’s 1998 watch fair.
Recent introductions include exotic creations such as the Lo Scienziato-Luminor Tourbillon GMT with a 3D-printed titanium case; the L’Astronomo-Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Moon Phases Equation of Time GMT, the first Panerai to feature a moon phase indication with a clever twist – it uses a polarised crystal to indicate the date; and the Submersible eLab-ID, a concept watch with the highest percentage of recycled-based material yet found in a timepiece.
