Former prime minister John Howard said national sporting bodies should 'stay out' of the Voice to Parliament referendum, arguing that taking positions on contested political issues like the Voice undermines the capacity of sport to bring people together.

Former prime minister John Howard has lamented the trend of national sporting bodies taking public positions on contentious political issues like the proposed Indigenous Voice to Parliament.Last week the NRL joined Tennis Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee in supporting the Yes campaign in the Voice to Parliament referendum, and the AFL is widely expected to follow suit.

“The idea that a sporting body, an organ, a roof organisation, a national body, a state body can speak with authority on behalf of the whole football code is ridiculous,” Mr Howard told Sky News Australia’s Paul Murray. “When I was Prime Minister, I used to say sport was a great natural cement in the way in which it crossed the divide,” Mr Howard said, before giving an example of watching St George Illawarra with two former Labor ministers.

Mr Speakman’s remarks come after it was revealed that the Coalition in New South Wales will not bind its members to a certain position on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament ahead of the referendum later this year. “Premier Perrottet, as he then was, supported a Voice to Parliament in principle,” Mr Speakman told Sky News Australia. “What we now have is a proposal for a Voice to the executive as well, we’ve seen the detail of the wording.” He said he’s “sympathetic” to the idea of the Voice but has been concerned about the wording of the referendum.

‘Very arrogant’ of sporting codes to suggest they can ‘influence Australians’ on the Voice‘Very arrogant’ of sporting codes to suggest they can ‘influence Australians’ on the VoiceShadow Indigenous Australians Minister Jacinta Price says she thinks it’s “deeply insulting” that sporting codes think they know what’s best for her and her family amid debate over the Voice. This comes after former prime minister John Howard came out and urged sporting codes to not get involved in the Voice debate, saying they shouldn’t get involved in partisan political debates. “It’s also very arrogant to suggest that they could influence Australians on a matter that affects well everybody but treats Indigenous Australians in a most paternalistic way,” Ms Price told Sky News host Paul Murray. “To actually take for granted and suggest that they know what’s best for Indigenous Australians. “I think it’s deeply insulting as an Indigenous Australian that sporting codes think that they know what’s best for my life, my family’s life, and are dictating to the rest of the country what they think’s best when they are absolutely and utterly removed of the circumstances of my family and effectively dividing our nation along the lines of race.”
