The Light Rail Manila Corporation's KasakaySayan initiative plays short historical facts about LRT-1 station names over the PA system, turning rides into history lessons and promoting the line as the nation's Heritage Line.
This initiative, called KasakaySayan, was launched by the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the private operator of the LRT-1 line, back in December 2025 as part of its branding of LRT-1 as the country's ' Heritage Line.
' Created in partnership with DDB Group Philippines and heritage advocacy group Renacimiento Manila, the program turns ordinary commutes into bite-size history lessons. By sharing the stories behind station names, KasakaySayan encourages commuters to appreciate the railway as more than just public transport, but also as a journey through Philippine history. The LRT-1, as the oldest train line in the metro, passes through many of Metro Manila's historic streets, districts, churches, museums, universities, and cultural landmarks.
The program features short historical facts played over the PA system on select fourth-generation trains after the standard next station announcement. These facts detail the historical figure, place, or significant event each station is named after.
For instance, the northern terminus, Fernando Poe Jr. Station, honors the iconic Filipino actor and director, posthumously declared a National Artist for Film. The station was renamed in 2023 to align with Republic Act No. 11608, which also renamed the adjacent Roosevelt Avenue. Balintawak Station references the Cry of Balintawak (or Cry of Pugad Lawin) in August 1896, where Andres Bonifacio and Katipuneros tore their cédulas to reject Spanish rule.
Yamaha-Monumento Station combines the Bonifacio Monument by National Artist Guillermo Tolentino with a corporate naming rights deal with Yamaha Motor Philippines, reflecting the area's reputation as the 'Motorcycle Capital.
' Abad Santos Station commemorates Chief Justice José Abad Santos, executed by Japanese forces in 1942 and featured on the P1,000 banknote. Doroteo Jose Station, the main transfer to LRT-2, is named after a patriot arrested in 1898 for opposing a corrupt archbishop; the street was renamed in his honor in 1914. Pedro Gil Station honors Dr. Pedro Gil, a physician, journalist, labor leader, and legislator; the street was formerly Herran Street.
Vito Cruz Station remembers Hermogenes Vito Cruz, a 19th-century mayor of Pineda (now Pasay) and Katipunan leader who fought Spanish and American forces. Gil Puyat Station is named after the prominent businessman and former Senator (1951-1972); the avenue was previously Buendia Avenue, a name still commonly used. EDSA Station, a major hub connecting to MRT-3, derives its name from the famous Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, a thoroughfare central to many historic events, including the 1986 People Power Revolution.
