French President Emmanuel Macron announced a major renovation and expansion of the Louvre museum, including a dedicated room for the 'Mona Lisa'. The project, called 'Louvre New Renaissance', aims to modernize the world's most visited museum and address issues of overcrowding and outdated facilities.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday a major renovation and expansion project for the Louvre museum in Paris , dubbed ' Louvre New Renaissance .' This ambitious undertaking, slated to take up to a decade, will encompass a wide array of improvements, including the creation of a dedicated room for Leonardo da Vinci's iconic masterpiece, the ' Mona Lisa .' Macron revealed the project during a speech delivered from the current hall where the ' Mona Lisa ' is displayed.
He emphasized the plan to relocate the painting to a new, specially designed space accessible to visitors via a separate ticket. This move aims to alleviate overcrowding and enhance the visitor experience. Currently, the 'Mona Lisa' resides behind protective glass in the museum's largest room, often drawing throngs of eager onlookers. This congestion often overshadows other notable works by artists such as Titian and Veronese. The Louvre New Renaissance project will also include the construction of a new entrance near the Seine River, scheduled for completion by 2031. Funding for this new entrance will be secured through ticket sales, museum patronage, and licensing revenue from the Louvre Abu Dhabi branch. A design competition will be launched in the coming months to select the architectural vision for this transformative entrance. In addition to the new entrance, the renovation plans involve the creation of subterranean exhibition spaces to expand the museum's capacity. The estimated cost of the entire project, spanning a decade, is projected to range from 700 to 800 million euros ($730 to $834 million). Half of this funding will be allocated by the French government, covering operational expenses and employee salaries. The remaining half will be sourced from private funds, including ticket sales, revenue generated from restaurants, shops, and special events, as well as contributions from patrons and other partners.Director Laurence des Cars, in a note to Culture Minister Rachida Dati earlier this month, expressed concerns about the Louvre's aging infrastructure, highlighting issues such as water leaks, temperature variations, and inadequate insulation. These concerns raised the alarm about the potential degradation of the building and its possible impact on the preservation of priceless artworks. The iconic glass pyramid, designed by I.M. Pei and unveiled in 1989, is also considered outdated. The lack of proper insulation and the prevalence of noise within the pyramid have created an uncomfortable environment for both visitors and staff. The Louvre New Renaissance project aims to address these shortcomings, ensuring a more comfortable, sustainable, and secure environment for the museum's valuable collection and its millions of visitors.
