A Nalcor employee relocation claim totalling $50K included the cost of shipping a tractor, a hot tub, 2 utility trailers and 6 recreational vehicles. The AG's report reveals much more about a lack of financial oversight in the former Crown corporation.

Auditor General of Newfoundland and Labrador Denise Hanrahan speaks to media about a report filed with the House of Assembly Thursday, Oct. 6, regarding Nalcor Energy. Glen Whiffen/The TelegramST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Food for a Christmas party in 2017 at then Nalcor Energy’s company-owned facility McParland House in Churchill Falls cost the public $20,000 — double the amount originally approved for the event.

“Our audit sample included a claim by one employee for relocation costs in 2014 that totalled $50,000,” the report notes. “The claim included the cost of shipping a tractor, a hot tub, two utility trailers and six recreational vehicles. The same employee was also reimbursed for shipping a car at a cost of $5,000, which is 67 per cent higher than the government limit of $3,000.

Auditor General Denise Hanrahan said Thursday’s report shows Nalcor Energy did not always ensure the best possible use of public money, particularly when managing its discretionary expenses and the use of embedded contractors for project management for the Lower Churchill Project. "... we found that there were no policy guidance on how hospitality, guest relations, honorariums and various employee-related expenses were spent."On travel expenses, the report notes that Nalcor’s meal per diem of $54 daily for in-province travel was 24 per cent higher than government.
