Quebec Premier François Legault seemed to offer an opening to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, ever a critic of increased government spending, to meet the premiers’ goal of a significant increase in federal health spending.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier François Legault chat in a coffee shop in Montreal on Dec. 20, 2022.
Quebec Premier François Legault did not hide his disappointment on Tuesday with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s proposal to increase Ottawa’s contribution to health care by $4.8 billion a year, far short of the premiers’ target of a $28-billion annual increase. And he seemed to offer an opening to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, ever a critic of increased government spending, to meet the premiers’ goal of a significant increase in federal health spending.
“What I understand from Mr. Trudeau is that this is pretty much the final offer,” Legault said of the proposal to send the premiers $198 billion over 10 years, with the bulk of that amount in ongoing commitments and only $48 billion in new money.
