Cameras at the scene captured Obed striking Jimmy Corcoran several times before he stumbled and collapsed
NS fans turn up for Crosby's homecoming | SaltWireST. JOHN'S, N.L. — A woman charged with killing her ex-partner on a downtown St. John’s street two years ago pleaded guilty to manslaughter Tuesday.
Prosecutor Paul Thistle read aloud details of the evening Obed killed Corcoran, 49, near the corner of Cabot Street and Cookstown Road in August 2021. Doorbell and surveillance cameras had captured video of the two arguing and Obed fumbling for something inside her shirt before repeatedly striking Corcoran, at one point delivering a fatal blow to the left side of his neck. Corcoran put his hand to his neck and stumbled down the road, collapsing behind a parked vehicle.
Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officers arrested her on site and took her into custody. After she refused to answer their questions on three different occasions, police used an undercover officer posing as Obed’s cellmate in the women’s prison in Clarenville to gain evidence from her. Earlier this year Justice Glen Noel ruled to exclude parts of that evidence after finding the undercover officer had breached Obed’s rights by eliciting certain statements from her.
