A huge part of the problem is a porous border. Outgoing containers are rarely searched , allowing thieves to use the port at Montreal as a handy evacuation for hot vehicles, often mere hours after they’ve been taken. While theft is also rising farther west, the proximity of Montreal means Quebec and Ontario provide attractive opportunities. Unless the federal government throws up some real hurdles, things will continue to get worse.
The problem is that until they do that, everything else is a stop-gap, something Mayor Brown readily admits. Every piece of advice on how to prevent your vehicle from being stolen is essentially a tip to make them steal someone else’s. Warning stickers of alarms, etching and sensors for tracking systems, locked or hidden OBD ports—even The Club is making a comeback, that fabulous Father’s Day gift from the 1980s.
