Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana urged concerned government agencies under the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to support the Department of Health (DOH) as it declared a nationwide dengue epidemic on Tuesday due to the alarming number of dengue cases and deaths recorded nationwide.
“I issued a memorandum circular enjoining all member-agencies to support the nationwide epidemic dengue response. Ibig sabihin, lahat ng members ng NDRRMC will now support the efforts of the DOH to stop this epidemic once and for all. As Secretary of Health [Francisco Duque] said, the number is staggering,” Lorenzana, the concurrent chairman of the NDRRMC, said in an emergency meeting held at NDRRMC headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
In the said meeting requested by Duque to the NDRRMC, the health chief revealed that a total of 146,062 dengue cases have already been recorded from January to July 20, which saw a 98-percent increase compared to the record during the same period in 2018. A total of 622 deaths were also noted.Lorenzana said it is up to the provinces, cities ,and municipalities affected by dengue to declare their own state of calamity.
“Why are we not yet declaring national emergency or state of calamity? It’s because it’s not nationwide. May areas na malaki ang tama, may maliit ,” he explained. Office of Civil Defense Administrator and NDRRMC Executive Director Ricardo Jalad said that 11 dengue-stricken areas across the country have so far declared a state of calamity.
