Boris Johnson has promised to set out a roadmap for lifting lockdown by the end of next week.

and asked to sit in every other seat in order to get pubs and bars back open.

Pub chain Wetherspoon has come under fire for saying it will reopen its 880 bars in June with social distancing. The company said its venues tended to be larger than its rivals and this would help it to space out customers but Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said it would be a ‘mistake’ for different businesses ‘to just go off on a tangent and do their own thing’.Brits could return to work as early as May 26 under the Prime Minister’s plan to ease lockdown measures, according to reports.

Although UK guidelines advice keeping a two meter distance, the World Health Organisation advises a lesser distance of one meter. Prof Robert Dingwall, a sociologist who sits on the Government’s New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, says that the advice has ‘never had much of an evidence base’‘It is extraordinarily unlikely that any transmission will occur in the few seconds you are standing next to someone as you both reach for the instant coffee’ he said.

Heathrow Airport boss John Holland-Kaye has also cast doubt on a quick recovery, saying it would be ‘physically impossible’ to maintain social distancing measures at airports and that there will need to be better health checks of passengers. Shops planning on re-opening are expected to follow supermarkets by setting up a queue system, Perspex screens and contactless payments only at checkouts. Some, such as Debenhams, have placed orders for personal protective equipment for staff, acrylic screens and signage to enforce distancing. Others, such as B&Q, will stock handsanitiser at trolley stations.
