Long sought\u002Dafter convenience puts to rest recent conspiracy theory about the desirability of having necessities within easy reach.

Yet that concept has taken on new meaning post-pandemic and amid growing climate change concerns with the popularity of a relatively old concept: the 15-minute city. And a new study by Re/Max Canada called the The 15-Minute Neighbourhood: Lessons for Small Communities notes that many Canadians like the concept, with 72 per cent agreeing a commute time of 15 minutes or less to work, school, child-care and various amenities would make their lives better.

Executive vice-president of Re/Max Canada Elton Ash notes that, although taking on new meaning after the pandemic, the 15-minute city really dates back to the original idea behind cities. That is, before the rise of the automobile, which made travelling long distances more feasible. “At that point, we got into the ’60s and car culture,” he says. “The suburbs really blossomed in that time period.”

As commute times have increased over decades, along with concerns about climate change and more recently, the growth of the work-from-home trend, the 15-minute city concept is again a topic of conversation. Of course, one element of that has been that some individuals have wrongly alleged it’s part of a broader plan by a cabal of elites to trap people in their communities — a conspiracy theory partly fuelled by anger over COVID-19 public health orders, according to some news reports.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
