At least 27 people died after three boats capsized over rough waters near the Parola Wharf in the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait, Guimaras Governor Samuel Gumarin and the province's disaster council said Sunday.
The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Guimaras reported 53 survivors while six remain missing after the pumpboats Chi-Chi, Keziah and Jenny Vince capsized on Saturday. Philippine Coast Guard Spokesperson Captain Armand Balilo said they will continue search and rescue operations. However, sailing has been temporarily prohibited in the area, as well as in areas in Bicol and Central Visayas, since Saturday.
He explained that the motorboats were allowed to sail last weekend because there was no public storm warning. He added that Coast Guard Station Iloilo reported the area had fair weather before the accident.
