Abhishek Patel was a general practitioner in Ukraine and India before moving to the Sault on a study permit in 2020

Abhishek Patel, a 28-year-old from Ahmedabad, India and a recent Sault College graduate, is just a few steps away from achieving his Canadian dream of becoming a registered doctor – and he’s hoping to carry out that dream in the Sault.

Wanting to get a touch-up on the Canadian healthcare system, Patel ended up choosing the Sault for the college’s healthcare and administration program. He says Sault College was one of the only schools in the province that were accepting applications in January for a general healthcare program, which was a huge draw for him at the time.

Since graduating from Sault College this past June, Patel got a work permit and has been working as a part-time PSW at Extendicare Mapleview. He was also employed as a lab patient technician at Life Labs. “It was my childhood dream to be a doctor,” he says. “It’s been a really long journey to get here, I’ve learned so much, and I’ve been studying a lot to prepare for these exams.”
