Ontario’s minister of labour says the province is expanding workplace coverage of cancers for firefighters.
Monte McNaughton says pancreatic and thyroid cancers will now be presumed to be work related, which he says will allow firefighters to speed up their Workplace Safety and Insurance Board claims.https://media.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/1977/files/2023/03/jw-1.wav “We’ve spoke many times of what kind of damage we did in the early days when we didn’t have all these self-contained breathing apparatus and many of us were exposed to, you know, chemicals and things that we find out today are very harmful.”
City of Belleville Fire Chief Monique Belair is pleased to hear of the changes which will be retroactive to 1960 in order to cover both active and retired firefighters. “And with our own department here in Belleville having 13 line of duty deaths and several of them being cancer related, it’s really great to see it that they’re including two more.”
