The Boxing Day Test against South Africa is into day two, with Australia's batters hoping to back up another dominant display by their bowling attack. Follow live.
One of the big talking points from yesterday's day play was the fitness of Mitch Starc, who suffered a nasty looking finger injury on his bowling hand when fielding in the deep.
Starc had been bowling well, taking 2-39 from his 13 overs, but immediately left the field and, although he did return, was not thrown the ball for the rest of the innings. It was reported on Fox Sports that he hadn't dislocated the finger, but this picture seems to tell another story... There's a lot that can go wrong with fingers though, so it may have been anything, but Brien Seeney, better known as NRL Physio on Twitter, postulated it could be mallet finger - which in the States is sometimes known as baseball finger.
It essentially happens when anything hard hits the tip of the finger and forces it to bend further than it should do.Most injuries of this type don't need surgery, but would need to be held in a splint for several weeks in order to heal properly, or else risk permanent deformation.
