Mr Piotrowski says if the number is north of five per cent the prospect of a rate hike “becomes greater”. “The number to look for is five per cent – that’s the rate of underlying inflation that the markets are expecting within these figures,” Mr Piotrowski said. “If you see a figure north of five per cent for that underlying measure ... that’s going to be a little bit problematic as far as stocks are concerned.
“If it’s substantially north of five per cent then the prospect of a rate hike on Melbourne Cup Day becomes greater that’s for sure.”
