A fire sparked by a lithium-ion battery has destroyed several vehicles, including a luxury car at Sydney Airport.

Fire crews were called to a carpark on Airport Drive in Mascot at about 8.30pm on Monday after flames had ravaged five vehicles.Pictures from the scene show multiple melted-down vehicles, including the burnt-out lithium-ion battery.

Picture: FRNSW."A battery, which had recently been detached from the luxury car and stored in the lot, was quickly identified as having sparked the blaze," Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement.

The blaze was extinguished and experts from FRNSW‘s Fire Investigation and Research Unit as well as the Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies attended the scene to investigate. "These insights will assist them in continually develop best practice for emergency response to lithium-related fires, and informing industry on how to manage the risks associated with emerging technologies," they said.
