Brandon Bell of the Blue Jays breaks his bat while hitting against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park on August 18, 2023 in Cincinnati.Life in the Victoria Park Homeless Encampment | SaltWireThe return of Bo Bichette can’t come soon enough for a Blue Jays team that spends too many nights lost at the plate and as a result is slumping mightily at one of the worst points of the season.
And so it goes with a team that fell to 67-56 with its latest loss and is maddeningly inept at the worst times. How bad was it? The Jays didn’t manage a base runner from the third inning until a two-out walk to Brandon Belt in the eighth as they managed just three hits on the night, one big hit less than their opponent.
“We’re definitely looking forward to his bat,” Jays manager John Schneider said back in Toronto earlier in the week with perhaps the understatement of the season. “Knowing him and with everything he’s been doing, there shouldn’t be many restrictions. If the Jays were deliberate in getting Bichette back in the lineup, it was by design. Throughout his career, the shortstop has thrived on being an everyday player who doesn’t go half speed.
After a grinding 31-pitch second inning, Berrios shut down the Reds with the prowess he’s employed for much of his terrific bounce back season.
