Alleged Chinese interference an ‘awkward’ situation for Trudeau's LiberalsAs the Conservative Party continues to hammer the Liberals for allegations of Chinese interference in Canada, it’s becoming clear the situation is an awkward one for the Liberals to navigate, say political observers. Jeremy Paltiel, a Carleton University political scientist specializing in Canada-China relations, said the allegations of election interference by China were awkward for the governing Liberals, who have historically cultivated deeper ties with the Chinese diaspora in Canada than the Conservatives, whose tough-on-China approach has at times disaffected that base. Photograph courtesy of Carleton University “The unspoken part of it is the awkwardness of this particular allegation,” Paltiel said, referencing the balancing act Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (Papineau, Que.) must perform, of standing up to China without alienating some of his Chinese-Canadian supporters—a significant voting block, particularly in the greater Toronto area. On Nov. 7, Global News reported that the prime minister and certain cabinet ministers were briefed on the threat of Chinese interference in the 2019 Canadian election in January 2022. According to the initial report, which cited intelligence memos and “separate sources with knowledge of the 2022 briefs,” there was a clandestine network operating in favour of China, which included 11 candidates running in the 2019 federal election. Global cited recent information from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) that there were allegedly payments totalling $250,000 made to those involved in the network, which also included 13 campaign staff. A sitting Ontario MPP allegedly received the sum from the Chinese consulate in Toronto, and dispersed it to the members of the network.
