The mask wars are heating up once again as temperatures cool and respiratory virus season kicks off.

Requests to both the Ontario medical officer and Toronto’s medical officer brought about very different answers.Dr. Vinita Dubey, associate medical with Toronto Public Health, said masks are recommended for all this fall. “Mandatory masking is not being considered. As always, individuals around those at high risk of infection may consider wearing a mask to prevent the possible spread of respiratory viruses and stay healthy this fall respiratory season,” said Hannah Jensen, spokesperson for Health Minister Sylvia Jones.Even when presenting their fall plan for COVID, flu and respiratory syncytial virus , neither Jones nor Ontario’s chief medical officer Dr. Kieran Moore made suggestions like Dr. Tam did.
Perhaps you’ve heard that cases are rising and that there are new variants and that is why we should return the practices of the pandemic that we long ago abandoned. The latest figures from Public Health Ontario show that while cases are going up, we are still at incredibly low levels of COVID-19 in the community.
