From brianlilley: Ford asks Trudeau to let Bombardier bid on defence contract
“Bombardier not only employs thousands of workers in the GTA, but their Canadian supply chain also supports thousands of spinoff jobs in Ontario and across the country,” the statement from Ford’s office read. “That’s why the premier is urging the federal government to pursue a fair and open procurement process that considers a Canadian solution and supports thousands of high-paying jobs for Ontario workers while ensuring the best product wins.
Still, the feds have made statements that “the P-8A Poseidon is the only currently available aircraft that meets all of the CMMA operational requirements.” The Poseidon is made by Boeing in Seattle, Washington and is a variation of the 737 passenger aircraft. The study, conducted for Bombardier by PricewaterhouseCoopers, shows that Bombardier’s operations, combined with those of their partner in the bid, Ottawa-based General Dynamics Mission Systems, supports more than 22,000 jobs. That includes just shy of 11,000 jobs in Ontario, roughly 6,500 jobs in Quebec, 4,100 in the Atlantic region and just over 1,000 jobs in Western Canada. There are millions in taxes paid by these employees, by the suppliers, by those supported by these jobs.
