It\u0027s time for Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk to focus on tracking government spending instead of venturing into politics.
In her latest annual report, Lysyk’s team reported on highway construction prioritization, urban flooding, COVID vaccine rollouts and real estate brokers. The Auditor General Act is pretty clear on the duties of the office stating that they, “shall audit, on behalf of the Assembly and in such manner as the Auditor General considers necessary, the accounts and records of the receipt and disbursement of public money.” Elected officials are elected on their promises or their performance. It’s completely suitable for the auditor general to examine how money was spent but arguing over policy is again, another form of mission creep.The role of the auditor general is to be a financial watchdog for the people of Ontario, it’s not to police policy or argue policy with elected officials.
There is the Ottawa LRT project, the subject of a public inquiry that wrapped up this week with a scathing report. The province has sunk or promised billions of dollars for Ottawa’s LRT gamble, an audit would be welcomed.What about our public school system?
