The Greens have slammed Victoria’s decision not to sign up for the Albanese government’s new Murray-Darling plan out of fear it may stall progress to recover much needed water.

On Tuesday, Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek announced a new deal with New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT to return 450 GL back to the basin.after the plan backtracked on opposition to buying back water entitlements in exchange for an extension to deliver water-saving projects.

"The Victorian government is doing what the Victorian government has done forever on this issue, they sit across the border from SA and we are at their mercy," she told ABC's News Breakfast on Wednesday. As the Greens' environment and water spokesperson, Ms Hanson-Young expressed concern the Albanese government was “kicking the can down the road” by extending the previous 2024 deadline.

The Andrews government argued the state had significantly contributed to returning water levels, with 17.7GL of the 26GL contracted so far coming from Victoria, as it refused to compromise its position on buybacks.
