Tens of thousands of homes and businesses have been left without power across South Australia following a night of wild weather that included intense lightning and very strong wind gusts.

"We've restored about 8,000-9,000 of them and we're continuing to do that and we'll have fresh crews hitting the ground this morning once they get their safety briefings," spokesman Paul Roberts told ABC Radio Adelaide's Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz. The Bureau of Meteorology's Hannah Marsh said while it was windy and stormy, rainfall totals were more modest."Across the state to 6am this morning we had in excess of 16,600 lightning strikes.
"The SUV and tree were unable to be removed from the roadway as they were surrounded by powerlines," police said.
