The ACT Chief Minister said the federal government could better fund urgent health priorities through a 1 per cent increase on the levy.
has proposed a 1 per cent increase to the Medicare levy for the highest income earners, in a bid to better fund the nation’s struggling health system.
He said the federal government could keep the additional revenue for health priorities such as Labor’s planned urgent care clinics. “I think that’s for good reason. They have taken all the revenue-raising capacity and still expect us to run the schools and the hospitals. But after 11 years as a treasurer and with a new federal government, I didn’t want my contribution to this summit to be couched as simply another cash grab.
Mr Barr called the proposal palatable and sensible, and well-designed to “address what I see as the biggest domestic public policy challenge facing our nation in the short term – being the sustainability of the health system.”“That’s not something that we’re considering, but we do want to work with the states and territories to make sure that we can adequately fund their health systems,” he said on Thursday.
