The Liberal Party is expected to finalise its position on the Voice referendum with Sky News Australia’s Political Editor Andrew Clennell flagging Peter Dutton will put forward a starkly different alternative to the government’s model.

MPs have been summoned to Canberra by Liberal leader Peter Dutton to settle the party’s position on the Voice at a meeting on Wednesday, Sky News Australia’s Political Editor Andrew Clennell has revealed.

“A legislated voice involving rural and regional local voices; that’s my understanding that’s the direction it’s heading. However, Mr Wyatt conceded there were members who “strongly” opposed the model, as he called on the party leadership to proceed with a conscience vote. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has dubbed the opposition the “noalition”, but Mr Dutton will likely use the Voice debate to provide a clear alternative to the government’s agenda.

The 2021 Calma-Langton Indigenous Voice Co-design report, which has informed much of the detail around the government’s proposal, recommended a spate of Local and Regional Voices in conjunction with a national body.
