Nova Scotia Liberal Leader Zach Churchill says a emergency session of the Nova Scotia legislature is necessary to deal with the health-care crisis and particularly with the recent deaths of two women who were not able to access the emergency care they needed.
“This work should be above politics and good ideas can come from anywhere. Given that Zach Churchill is a former health minister who played a key role in creating the health-care status quo, we would welcome his ideas from that experience. He has our number. Anything more than that is just grandstanding.”
There were 558 emergency department deaths last year, the highest annual total in the last six years. Claudia Chender, leader of the New Democratic Party: 'That’s a systemic problem, not an individual problem but this is the problem that we have to solve and it’s not a quick fix. ' - Eric Wynne photo Chender said the province has to keep its population healthier and to ensure access to timely primary care when people get sick.
“When any patient unexpectedly dies in emerg or anywhere else in our facilities, it’s very difficult on the staff,” Hazelton said.“Nurses are working short,” Hazelton said “Let’s say there are supposed to be 10 on the shift, sometimes there’s six. They are down four nurses. If 10 is what’s needed to give care, we need 10. I had six patients, now I have nine.”
“We believe that the greater crisis facing Nova Scotians right now and what we should all be focusing on is the state of our health-care system,” Churchill said.
