In the coming months David Eby will face a choice, to steer our forests into the future or revert to the same business-as-usual approach that has got us into this situation. Now is the time to rebuild B.C.’s broken forest industry. We’ve lost nearly 50,000 forestry jobs since 2000, how many more will it take before we come to the conclusion that the system is broken?Article content
My vote is that he establish regional public log sorts and sales yards across the province that could help to set the price for stumpage. The current system captures only a fraction of the value of timber that is cut. Sell logs, not standing timber, to set the market price. Local mills and small operations could flourish creating low-volume, high-value forestry jobs. We must create value by making things, not selling raw resources.
The new vision for our forests is to leave our primary and old growth forests intact. To make more from less while supporting local producers that care deeply about the future of our communities and the state of our forests. To heal the land and waters by employing forest workers to rehabilitate lands and streams.
