While far from the total solution to the issues rural and remote communities face in receiving adequate emergency response, people should not be dying unnecessarily from cardiac arrest in this day and age when these simple, effective and proven life-saving devices exist. This strategy and legislation is something that the Heart and Stroke Foundation and countless other groups have been advocating for many years now, but the government continues to not see it as a priority.

According to the 2016-2021 Census, Vancouver built 6.1 per cent more housing supply than its 4.9-per-cent population growth, leaving 23,000 empty homes. From 2018 to 2022, City Council also approved 254 spot zonings for high-density housing, accommodating in the zoning pipeline alone, almost any future population growth projections for Vancouver.

More housing supply alone won’t create affordable housing, unless that increase in supply is “made affordable” through other government policies. And so far only 250 out of the 6,000 units in Senakw are being set aside for “affordable” housing.Westbank plans to build an access road right through Vanier Park, a beloved seaside oasis, and home to Bard On The Beach, the Maritime Museum, the Planetarium, the Music Academy, and the Burrard Civic Marina.
