Port Moody councillor says a livable community can\u0027t simply add condos as fast as possible
We are seeing cities greenlight developments with more and more density and less and less benefits for the local community. But, this is making the affordability problem worse, not better. Every approval sets a new higher expectation on what will be allowed for the next development which increases land values even more. This makes it even harder to build the projects we truly need, like co-ops, social housing, and below-market housing.
Out-of-control densification is not going to make housing more affordable. And while some densification is necessary as population growth continues, growth cannot be unlimited in a reality where land space and civic finances are anything but. This is exactly why we have official community plans. It’s through these plans that we consider all the factors together that make growing communities livable.
The decisions of today will affect our children for generations to come. It’s time we stopped and asked ourselves, what kind of future are we building?
