Government should not be building housing for middle class.
As stated in the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights, “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
Instead of housing the middle class, we should be looking after the people who are suffering the most, by triaging subsidized housing recipients the same way hospital workers triage emergency patients. People who are in danger of dying from strokes, head injuries, and gunshot wounds are treated first, while the people merely suffering from broken arms and sprained ankles are treated further down the line.
There are other hazards to living outdoors. Homeless people with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and kidney diseases, can’t properly look after themselves. People living in cars or tents don’t have fridges to keep fresh produce cool, or electrical appliances to cook meals that would keep them healthy. Instead, they eat a lot of fast food and high-sodium, high-sugar processed “shelf-stable” foods.
In 2021, 247 homeless people died while living outside or in their cars, according to our chief coroner. Most of these deaths were from tainted drug overdoses while 13 per cent were classified as “natural causes,” and seven per cent were listed as suicides.
