Readers discuss the ban on compostable shopping bags, Trudeau\u0027s battle with Alberta, tensions over Pride celebrations and more

Actually, it is Sikander Hashmi’s accusation that teachers are “anti-racist hypocrites targeting Muslim kids,” which is unintentionally ironic. Indeed, the teachers’ criticism of Muslim kids not belonging here was obviously wrong because it is a stupid and ignorantly worded conclusion. But practitioners of anti-racism aren’t being hypocritical when they support both the rights of Muslim kids and the rights of the LGBTQ to be free from discrimination at school.

Our reality is that religious freedom in Canada is not absolute but limited by context. Canadian tolerance means that we put up with other people’s sacred prejudices in certain spaces and not elsewhere. Thus, religious expression of intolerance is legally permissible in places of worship like churches, synagogues or mosques, but not in school.

Consequently, of course, one is entitled to cry discrimination for their side. But being Canadian means being judged by the same Canadian standard of tolerance. Don’t discriminate against others in school, and the teachers will have no justifiable reason to teach an anti-discrimination lesson to you.

The widely publicized clash between the Alberta teacher and the Muslim student who opted out of participating in a school Pride activity is a sad illustration of a much broader problem.

If there are to be mandated celebrations in schools, places of work, etc., these celebrations should focus on values that involve effort rather than chance, are universally accepted to be virtuous and reflect our common humanity. I doubt many parents or students would take issue with celebrations of volunteerism, charity, honesty, diligence, politeness, safety or conservation.
