Two buildings, two responses I am writing to draw attention to the sharp contrast in two building projects in Prince Edward Island that tends to frame the ...

on Prince Edward Island in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s life and death, I didn’t know that this would be the third statutory holiday in September in P.E.I. People loudly complained about losing income and business. Puzzled, I consulted ‘Dr. Google’ to find out when the third statutory holiday was and what it was for.

“The ‘truth’ is, that without forgiveness there can be no freedom and no reconciliation — none of these things can be bought or sold! This is the “truth which will set us free.’” The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, warned the world on Sept. 20, “Humanity [is] on the edge of an abyss, and moving in the wrong direction … we must restore trust and inspire hope.”

In much of our world today ‘trust’ and ‘truth’ seem to have mysteriously morphed into a word synonymous with greed: ‘more.’ — everyone wants more! Why doesn’t the government give us more? Why doesn’t management pay more? Why aren’t there more houses? Always we want more, and if it seems that one group is getting more, there is friction and discontent.

This annual statutory holiday may be politically expedient, but children will not be going to school – again. Businesses and employees will lose income – again. At this time of soaring prices and living costs. The gentle breeze whispering: only truth, forgiveness and the freedom born thereof will make reconciliation possible, is increasingly drowned out by the gale roaring its incessant refrain: ‘We want more!’SaltWire Network welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publication.
