Letters to the editor, April 4

Columnist Vaughn Palmer misses the point of proposed Bill-15 changes to the Agricultural Land Commission Act. While the amendment may include an unfortunate choice of language, the fact is we have had almost 50 years of individual applications to exclude land from the ALR — a process that has undermined what is intended as a permanent zone for farmers and food production.

Bill-15 is long overdue. Time and again, British Columbians have expressed their strong support for the ALR. We need to get on with this next phase of securing farmland and farmers for the future — and not get distracted by nonsense about who is a person.Quebec move is totalitarianQuebec’s ban on religious symbols is secularism with a new face. The old secularism separated church and state.

Thank God that the referendum on proportional representation failed as it could have resulted in all these Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island, dominantly white environs, having 15 per cent of the seats Green instead of three. That would have been disproportionate power to a privileged class of mostly retired folks who can afford to prioritize “green” issues to to the detriment of working-class and immigrant folks.
