Wetlands provide habitat and serve as natural carbon-capture areas, this writer says.

As many of us know, the wetlands are vital to maintain the biodiversity of the Lower Mainland. It provides habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Also, wetlands are natural carbon capture areas.

As a Burnaby citizen who walks the paths of Foreshore Park, including the wetlands, I cannot see anywhere in Foreshore Park that can replicate this area. Burnaby staff does not say what wetlands will be restored, but if it is within the Burnaby park system, this does nothing to protect the vitally important wetlands which continue to be lost to development in the Metro Vancouver area. It will only restore small areas of wetlands, probably not along the Fraser River.
